The Indigo Workwear Jacket Collection
Six individually hand-dyed jackets created during my summer on Dartmoor.
There is something deeply satisfying about making a garment that is intended to be lived in.
Not saved for best. Not worn once and forgotten. But reached for each morning, thrown over a dress or jumper, pockets filled with notebooks, seed packets, paintbrushes or cold hands, gradually softening and becoming more beautiful with every year of wear.
That was the starting point for this collection.
Over the past few months I have been quietly refining a small series of workwear jackets, adjusting the pattern, testing fabrics, perfecting the proportions and returning again and again to the indigo vat until everything felt just right.
These are the finished pieces.
DESIGNED TO BE LIVED IN
I have always loved traditional workwear.
Clothing designed simply, honestly and beautifully. Clothes that are practical enough to work in, yet become more beautiful through years of use.
I wanted these jackets to have that same feeling.
The cropped silhouette sits comfortably over dresses, knitwear and high-waisted trousers. Three-quarter length sleeves have become one of my favourite details; practical while making, gardening and dyeing. Generous patch pockets are large enough for notebooks, keys or simply somewhere warm to tuck your hands.
Somehow it has quietly become the jacket I reach for almost every day.
A SLOWER WAY OF MAKING
Every jacket begins with organic cotton cloth.
It is then hand cut and sewn in Devon using organic cotton thread rather than conventional polyester thread.
There are no synthetic fibres.
No hidden polyester.
No petrochemical components.
Instead, every decision has been guided by the same philosophy that runs through all of my work — creating textiles that work with nature rather than against it.
I hope these jackets become garments that are worn, repaired, patched, handed down and loved for decades before eventually returning gently to the earth.
It is a slower way of making clothing.
One that values craftsmanship over speed, longevity over trends and connection over consumption.
DYED WITH LIVING INDIGO
Natural indigo is unlike any other dye.
Each jacket is dyed slowly by hand in my natural indigo fructose vat here at my cottage on Dartmoor.
Rather than applying colour directly to the cloth, indigo is built gradually through repeated immersions into the vat.
Each time the cloth emerges it appears almost luminous green before slowly transforming into blue as it meets the air.
It is one of the oldest dye traditions in the world and, to me, still one of the most magical.
Every immersion creates another layer of colour, another subtle shift in tone and depth that simply cannot be replicated by industrial dyeing.
Every jacket carries the record of that journey.
THE FINAL SUMMER
This collection carries a significance beyond the garments themselves.
Many of these jackets were dyed during long summer evenings in the garden of my cottage overlooking Dartmoor. Some were immersed beneath the Blue Moon that rose over the moor earlier this season, making this collection feel especially connected to this place and this moment in time.
As I prepare to leave this studio and begin a new chapter elsewhere, these jackets feel like a quiet way of marking the end of one season before another begins.
They carry something of this landscape within them.
The changing skies.
The summer evenings.
The rhythm of dipping cloth into indigo while swallows circled overhead and the light slowly faded across the moor.
In many ways they feel like the last pages of this chapter.
THE COLLECTION
There are only a small number of jackets in this collection.
Each one has developed its own personality through the dye process, making every piece entirely unique and completely irreplaceable.
No jacket will ever exist in exactly the same form again.
A couple quietly found homes before I had even photographed the collection, leaving just a handful now available.
