Making & using an Organic Indigo vat + Shibori @ Bristol Textile Quarter

  • bristol textile quarter Barton Road Bristol England (map)

This evening class will show you how to set up your own organic indigo vat and use shibori tie dyeing techniques, to up-cycle your own items.

Firstly, you will receive some theory and practical guidance in setting up the organic indigo vat, using just 3 simple natural ingredients - fructose, indigo and lime. Based on the 123 fructose vat recipe from Michel Garcia. You will learn how to tend the vat to keep it balanced and how to use it for shibori tie-dyeing. You will be shown a few simple shibori tie dye techniques to fold and bind your own small garments or items (A 100% natural fibre small vest or lingerie is perfect - nothing too big, heavy or fluffy), to up-cycle with this beautiful mystical blue colour.

You will leave with a good understanding of how to set up and use an indigo vat for yourself, do shibori tie-dyeing and continue your practice from home using simple kitchen equipment.

Class runs 6.30pm - 9.30pm, with a short break for refreshments. Please bring drinks and snacks to share.

Workshop price: £65/ Conc's: £58 - includes all required dye materials.

Please bring with you:

- 1 x 100% natural fibre small item or garment (to up-cycle with the organic indigo and shibori tie dyeing). A 100% natural fibre small vest or lingerie is perfect - nothing too big, heavy or fluffy.

You may also wish to bring an apron or wear clothing which you don't mind getting messy. Along with a journal and pen and camera to catalogue your creative journey.

There will also be our beautiful organic British-grown silk available by the metre to use in class, at an additional cost of £16 per 1/2 m or £32 per m for Haboutai and £17 per 1/2m or £34 per m for satin.

Rubber gloves will be available for indigo dyeing. And print outs will be provided to cover the techniques.
